Transforming Fashion: How the UN's Sustainable Development Goals are Driving Change

The United Nations (UN) has recognized the need for sustainable development in all sectors and aspects of society. In 2015, the UN released its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, a set of 17 goals with 169 targets to be achieved by 2030. These goals aim to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity.

The creation of the Sustainable Development Goals:

The SDGs were adopted in September 2015, by all 193 UN member states. The goals are universal and apply to all countries, rich and poor, as the world faces the challenges of poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace, and justice.

The purpose of the Sustainable Development Goals:

The SDGs were created to address the interconnected challenges that the world faces in the 21st century. They aim to eradicate poverty and hunger, promote sustainable economic growth and employment, reduce inequalities, and protect the planet's resources and ecosystems.

The Sustainable Development Goals and Taylor Yates:

Sustainability has become an important issue in the fashion industry, as consumers become increasingly aware of the impact of their purchases on the environment and society. The following SDGs are particularly relevant to us within the fashion industry:

Goal 8: Decent work and economic growth: This goal aims to promote sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all. We can contribute to this goal by providing fair wages and safe working conditions for workers in the supply chain.

Goal 12: Responsible consumption and production: This goal aims to ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns, by promoting resource efficiency, reducing waste, and minimising the environmental impact of consumption and production. We can contribute to this goal by using sustainable materials and production processes, and by promoting circular economy practices.

Goal 13: Climate action: This goal aims to take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. We can contribute to this goal by reducing its carbon footprint, adopting renewable energy sources, and promoting sustainable transportation.

Goal 14: Life below water: This goal aims to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources. We can contribute to this goal by reducing its use of synthetic materials that end up in the ocean and by supporting ocean conservation initiatives.

Goal 17: Partnerships for the goals: This goal aims to strengthen the means of implementation and revitalise the global partnership for sustainable development. We can contribute to this goal by promoting sustainable practices and by supporting initiatives that address social and environmental issues.

Why are the Sustainable Development Goals important?

The Sustainable Development Goals are important because they provide a framework for sustainable development that is inclusive, comprehensive, and ambitious. They address the most pressing global challenges and provide a roadmap for governments, businesses, and civil society to work together towards a sustainable future. Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals will require collective action, innovation, and commitment, but it will result in a world that is more equitable, prosperous, and resilient.

The Sustainable Development Goals are an essential guide for us to achieve sustainability. The fashion industry has a responsibility to contribute to the achievement of these goals, and by doing so, we can build a more sustainable future for all. Through collaboration and innovation, we can meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

We are a work in progress and look forward to continuing to grow with sustainability at the forefront of everything we do…Follow us to learn more about our journey!
